i used to think mirrors were honest. i changed the day i waved at one.
it waved back.
that's when i knew something fishy was going on: 1. it always seemed to know exactly what i was doing, and 2. it insisted on doing everything backwards.
i raised my right hand. it raised its left.
i arrived at two possible explanations:
- either mirrors copy us very quickly... or,
- they are left-handed.
i decided to be polite and not discriminate, and i have waved with both my hands ever since.
this way neither of us feels left out.
the mirror seemed happy about the arrangement.
i know because it smiled first. i only smiled afterwards.
and then the lord said, "love thy neighbour."
i asked whether mirrors counted.
he looked at one, shrugged, and said, "close enough." my reflection and i have become buddies. his reflection and i have too.
